Our Minnesota morning drive had a cathedral aisle feel, graced with serene sacredness.
There are two places that draw me to them like magnets....Northern Minnesota and Maine. Both are forested, one has lakes, the other the sea. When I'm at either, my soul sighs 'Aaaaaaah, I'm home." I feel it deep in my bones.
I wonder why that is.

Then, that's where you are meant to be. I feel that way in Maine and on the Oregon coast - the sea for me has always made me feel at peace. As for retirement, if I, alone, were to choose, I'd pick one of the "V" states, either Vermont or Virginia.
I've not seen Virginia, but have seen Vermont. The first thing I think of when I hear Vermont is the Bob Newhart show that took place there. He and his wife ran a country inn. The humorous line from one of its more colorful actors was, "Hello. This is my brother Darrell, and this is my other brother Darrell." OMG. I'm in total agreement that Vermont is an absolutely beautiful state.
...with many covered bridges.
Oh, yes, the eternally-prestigious covered bridges.
