Graduation parties and wedding receptions are a lot alike these days. Each graduate puts his/her signature on their celebration. The first sector of their life is complete. It's time to move on for more education or jump into the job market, such as it is.
My graduation party in 1964, consisted of my paternal aunt and uncle coming to our house for lunch after the graduation ceremony. Mom and daddy gave me a Lane cedar chest, which was the traditional daughter graduation gift back then. Its intended use was for me, the housewife. . . not me, the career girl. Today that cedar chest remains upstairs in the bedroom, a remnant of a different time. If my aunt and uncle gave me a gift, I have no memory of what it was. Their coming to my house was gift enough.

I didn't get a Party either. My younger brother did but I still have all my cards and some of the gifts that were given to me. Some were silver dollars and I still have the Graduation mortarboard charm my parents gave me engraved with the date I graduated from high school. I still treasure it.
