What's behind the gate?
An unfamiliar lifestyle setting,
with new doors and windows,
to open and watch through.
Both Security and Comfort
are shaking their pointy fingers at us,
and whining their requiems...
'You'll be sorry you left us for the unknown.'
What's behind the gate?
A guaranteed progression toward our ultimate fate.
If only we knew how many
years, months, weeks, days, or minutes remain.
Both Foresight and Wisdom
are nudging us and whispering their blessings,
"Secure your future
and 'don't pretend that
old age can be turned into an endless middle age.'"
When will we timely pull the pin?

Were you having a "sad" day when you wrote this poem? My goodnes...I'm glad I don't know when the pin will be pulled, but when it is I want to know that I've had a great life with each day filled with happiness and new experiences. There will be plenty of time to sit and watch out the window in my ripe old age of 80s and 90s (God willing).
Actually, the day I wrote this was one of my serious days, not sad days. Pulling the pin is referring to us selling our home and moving to other digs, more suitable to our age. We have no kids to look after us, and heaven knows we don't want to burden anyone else with what to do with us. We've been close to leaving already, but just haven't "pulled the pin." Big yard, house, maintenance, need for replacing this and that, all takes up time that we otherwise could be doing something more fun. Bottom line is the more fun. Appreciate your comment, MJ. Not to worry, I'm fine, just trying to think out our future and what will be best for us.
Thank heavens!! A reader never really knows what the writer is thinking about. With talk of pulling the pin and "old age", I thought you were referring to the final pin...you know DEATH. Glad to hear that you may just be "moving on" to enjoy life more with less work. We're all about enjoying every last minute and having FUN!!!
